Excerpt from the 17 May 2018 article in The Telegraph
“…CTE is a condition which was only written up for the first time in 2005 and was not even defined properly until 2015 and, while doctors can guess if a patient has it, the only definitive way to confirm CTE is by post-mortem diagnosis.
Therefore the next logical step of Dr Turner’s project is the launch of a brain donation scheme.
Former jockeys Bob Champion – “I don’t think they’ll find anything there” – and Richard Pitman – “I’m in a giving mood” (he has already given away a kidney) – are already card carriers having signed up to the scheme which is being organised by the Queen’s Square Brain Bank at the UCL Institute of Neurology.
Of course, the good doctor is not asking former sportsmen to give a brain today, he might be impatient but he will wait until they have finished with it, when Queen’s Square will make arrangements for it to be collected within 24 hours.
The brain may seem like the final frontier in donation but for research into concussion in sport, it could be one of the final pieces of the jigsaw.”
